Texas Health Research & Education Institute

CME Program Awarded Six-Year Accreditation

The Texas Health Research & Education Institute (TRE) is a nonprofit research institution affiliated with Texas Health Resources, governed by a volunteer board of trustees. TRE conducts research that contributes to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, and offers continuing medical education to physicians and other health care professionals. It is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

Through the Presbyterian Institute for Minimally Invasive Technology (PIMIT), TRE conducts clinical outcomes research on the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of minimally invasive procedures, and trains physicians and other healthcare professionals in the use of minimally invasive technologies. The PIMIT facility at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas includes classroom and teleconferencing capabilities, a skills lab and sterile procedure lab.

In June 2005, the Texas Health Resources Board of Trustees endorsed recommendations to broaden research and education efforts within THR following a yearlong evaluation of Texas Health research activity.

These recommendations were endorsed by the Texas Health Resources board:

  • New leadership for the Texas Health Research & Education Institute. In support of Texas Health's enhanced research and education activities, the Board endorsed the search for a new president for TRE, along with a name change and formation of a new board for the research institute. Current research will continue, including clinical trials and product evaluation and testing services.
  • New research efforts. Renewed emphasis will be placed on research focused on key clinical services and population-based research.
  • Development of a clearinghouse for research opportunities. A clearinghouse will support investigators in matching interests and sources of support on an ongoing basis.
  • Expanded educational opportunities for physicians. More continuing medical education and distance learning opportunities will be available to THR affiliated physicians and others locally, nationally and internationally.
